Evaluation

I changed the idea for my video many times. I had many ideas and wanted to do them all. Ultimately the idea of time was the one I finally decided on. I had many ideas on how I wanted my video to be but decided on having problems connecting to the concept of time.
Originally I wanted all of the problems to be different. They are all different, but they are mainly about having children. Judging by the questionnaire forms I can see that the audience also perceived the video as circling around babies and children.
I removed and added a lot of scenes during the filmmaking but tried to keep the same idea behind the video.
The effects in the video are exactly what I wanted, for example: the scene with the mother and child I wanted in fast motion then to suddenly go into slow motion. I felt as though this part of the video went well and the audience seemed to also enjoy it. This is one of my favourite parts of the video along with the earth melting scene and the boy looking at baby scan scene.
The scene with the boy looking at the scan was very emotional. The audience’s reactions to the video changed a lot when this scene came on.
This scene is very authentic as the actor in the video has been through that exact situation which is why I wanted him to do this scene. Everyone said that this was the most realistic scene.
The audience’s reaction differed from scene to scene and this is how I wanted my video to be. Each scene has a different atmosphere to it, which is created mostly from the backing music. I wanted to bring the audience to different emotions throughout the video.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to exhibit my video in the places I originally planned.
I did however show the video twice and in two different spaces.
The first exhibition was in the recording studio at college. As it is a very small space I only had two people watching my video at a time. The room was dark and the audience was seated on comfy chairs.
Their reactions towards the video seemed uncomfortable. The small space, lighting and only one other person in the room set a very enclosed atmosphere, which I hope helped to enhance the concept of not being able to escape life’s problems.
During some parts of the video the audience laughed, smiled and was almost brought to a tear. This proved my video as successful as each persons problem in the video aimed to bring out different emotions in the audience.
The second exhibition had a more complex layout that judging from the questionnaires, the audience enjoyed. There were 8 people viewing the video for this exhibition. All of the seats were in a row, facing in the opposite direction to the seat next to them. The video was shown on one projector on one wall and again from another projector on the opposite wall. This meant that half of the audience faced the front and half faced the back. The video was placed almost at the same time as each other with only a second difference to create an echo of the voices and music.
The audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy the exhibition and the video. I was very happy with the answers to the questionnaires. I was pleased that I had an exhibition that had a more unique layout to it.
The room was dark, just like the first exhibition so that the video could be seen easier. It wasn’t to make the audience uncomfortable as I wanted to see the different reactions in the audience depending on the location and set up of a room. The room was large but had tables and chairs in it. The audience was sat quite closely together but not too much that they would be uncomfortable.
The video still made the audience smile, laugh and seem sad but the audience seemed more intrigued than in the first exhibition.

In conclusion to the exhibitions, the second showing proved to be more relaxed and the audience’s emotions towards certain scenes were easier to identify. The first showing was uncomfortable and not relaxed at all. This made the audience quite stiff and as though they weren’t allowed to show emotion towards the video.
The audience’s feedback was great and I am very pleased. Almost everyone understood the concept. The music was said to be “exquisite” The concept was “very followable” Overall the audience enjoyed it. One said “the way it was told was unique”
If I was to do it again I wouldn’t stress as much about the original idea. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with an idea that would be fun and unique and found that in the end I ended up with my original idea.

There are many videos that share certain similarities as my video, such as; Telling Lies by Simon Ellis, this has non diagetic speech much like mine and the characters all have a problem yet mine is shown through video than text. My video has a lot of stop frame animation like Muto a wall painted animation by Blu even though the drawings aren’t as in depth.
My video is not one continuous scene; instead it is many short scenes some in different locations and with different people. Even though none of the scenes are the same they are all portraying the same thing. Koyaanisqatsi also has many different scenes, all gathering around the same idea but all of different locations and people.

In conclusion overall, I am happy with all aspects of the video, post and pre production, exhibition and the video itself. There are things that I would change but nothing too significant.

Diary entry 10

Entry 10 – 23/11/09

Today I was very pleased with my work; however I did have some problems at the beginning. I managed to edit almost all of my video and was too interested in completing my work that I hadn’t been saving it. The computer crashed and I lost all of the work that I had done. I remembered a lot of the parts that I had edited such as cropping clips, transitions and audio editing. This made it a lot easier to re-do all the work. I managed to edit it all and produce the soundtrack before the end of the lesson. The only thing left to do for the video is importing people’s thoughts over the top of the soundtrack.
For the soundtrack I didn’t want one that was similar throughout, instead I used music that portrayed what was happening in the scene. Even though none of the sound clips are similar they sound very good when played with the video. I used some sound effects such as a clock ticking and a child’s laugh. My favourite part of the video is during shot 6 when the mother is tapping the ball. As the rest of the scene is in fast motion I thought it would be quite effective to slow it down completely during one part of the scene. I chose when the mother is tapping the child’s ball as I thought that this would look the best. This is also the only part in the video that doesn’t have a soundtrack to it. When it is in slow motion the sound effect coming from tapping the ball looks good and I didn’t want to change it.

Diary entry 9

Entry 9 - 18/11/09

Today I was unable to get any editing done. I was very upset with this as I still had a lot to do.

Diary entry 8

Entry 8 – 16/11/09
This was the first day of post production. It took a while to import all of my video and get used to using the software. I managed to get some of my editing done but I wish I had got more done. I had some trouble when moving the clips onto the timeline and some clips ended up in the wrong places.

Diary entry 7

Entry 7 – 14-15/11/09
Over the weekend I went over and over each of the scenes that I had filmed. I wanted to make sure that I would be happy with them when editing. I also filled out the counter on my log sheet which will be useful for when I’m editing to know what scenes I want to import and which ones to not import.
I also made sure that all of my paperwork was done correctly and in order.

Diay entry 6

Entry 6 - 13/11/09
I only had one more scene to film, shot 3, woman preparing for a date. I originally hoped for it to be filmed in my own house but due to actors schedules I had to film at my mother’s house. Once I was there I began to set up all of the camera equipment I realised that I did not have my tape with me. This was very unfortunate and I couldn’t film until later on in the day. However, I managed to film later on that day at my own house which is where I intended to film originally.
This scene took 3 takes. The first take my actress laughed but it wasn’t very long into filming so I was happy to re-do it. The second take was good but I felt as though it wasn’t very realistic so I wanted to try again. I wanted all of my shots to be as realistic as possible as they are about real problems in life.
The last take went a lot better. I felt as though the acting seemed genuine and throwing the clothes was timed very well. I also added in a shot of the clothes falling onto the bed. I feel this adds a little more to the creativity.

Diary entry 5

Entry 5 – 12/11/09
I was very pleased with the amount of work that I managed to get done today.
I filmed shot 2, Man and woman having dinner, the man proposes to the woman. I filmed this scene last as this would take the longest. This scene had the most props; Dinner set, wine and glasses, candles, flower in the centre, engagement ring and box. Positioning the camera correctly proved harder than I originally thought. I had to position it so that you could see both characters and was already in the right angle for the proposal. I also had to position it low enough so that when the man did propose, you would be able to see him on his knee.
This shot took the longest not just because of props or camera positioning but because of actors as well. I played the woman in this shot and the man was played by Daniel Lawrance. Sammy-Lee Rosen helped me with recording the shot once I had positioned the camera for him. The first part of the shot went perfectly. Part 2 of the shot took two takes as the first time the man’s voice wasn’t loud enough. The shot went better on the second try.
Part 3 of shot 2 took the longest to film. In total it took 8 shots. Part 3 is an extreme close up of my face. I had to look as though I was confused and didn’t know what to say. This is a hard thing to portray without speaking as when you speak a lot of the emotion comes through that. The majority of the takes I laughed or coughed. This however was the scene that I had the most fun with. Take 8 I managed to not laugh or cough and the shot ended up O.K.
Shot 7, teenage boy looking at a photograph of his babies scan went very well. It only took 1 take and was portrayed in the exact way that I wanted it to.

Diary entry 4

Entry 4 - 11/11/09
Today I focused more on my paperwork then recording my video. All of my paperwork had been done except the storyboard and call sheet. I finished the storyboard and I am happy with my storyboard.
Yesterday I managed to get all of my stop frame animation filming finished. I changed the clock ticking idea for shot 4 and replaced it with the words ‘Tick, Tock’ being scribbled off the screen. This shot continues shot 8. I think that this is more effective than the clock ticking and more imaginative. Originally I was going to have the words appearing on the screen, but I preferred the idea of the words being scribbled out. This technique helps to emphasise our loss of time.
Tomorrow I intend to have the rest of my scenes filmed.

Diary entry 3

Entry 3 - 08/11/09
Today I filmed scenes; 6 & 7
Scene 6 went very well; it was filmed in only one take. I change the idea of his problem from having an argument with a friend, to being worried about becoming a father.
My original idea for shot 7 was to film the moon; unfortunately the night wasn’t clear enough to even see it. Because of this, I improvised by filming the Earth panning out and spinning on its axis. It still has the same idea behind it; I have just removed the moon from the beginning.
I intended to film scenes 8 and 9 this evening as well, but the camera battery ran out and has had to be charged up. I am returning the equipment tomorrow so I would like to have as many scenes filmed as possible.

Diary entry 2

Entry 2 – 07/11/09
Today I intended to have the majority of my scenes filmed, unfortunately not all of the actors turned up and could only do scenes; 1, 1.5, 3.
I am happy with how scenes 1 and 1.5 have turned out; the only problem was that during scene 1.5 the paper kept moving. Hopefully I can edit it to make it look better. Scene 3 went well; I originally hoped that the child would play by himself, but he was very interested in Pingu on the television so I had to interact with him in the scene. I caught 7minutes 54seconds of footage for scene 2 which will be edited down and shown in fast forward. The idea of the fast motion is to enlarge the idea of him growing up too quickly, as this is the mother’s problem.
Yesterday I hoped to film the moon but it was too cloudy and tonight is too cloudy and raining. Hopefully tomorrow night will be a clear one so that I can have that scene filmed.
Because the actors that were supposed to film scene 2 today were unavailable I had to stand in for them. This made it more difficult to film as I also had to interact with the child. So instead I had help in filming while I was in the frame.
Originally I had hoped for different actors for each scene, this proved quite difficult fitting filming around their schedules and equipment booking times. Instead I am using repeat actors. This however makes my video seem less authentic so I have arranged it so that no one is in two consecutive scenes. This will help to separate the idea of repeating actors and make the video more realistic.

Diary entry 1

Entry 1 - 06/11/09
I changed the video for the millionth time, tweaking little parts to make it better. The paperwork has been taking a long time to do as I keep changing my idea.
The concept of my video has changed completely. It is now based on life schedules and how we live our life with certain markers in place. Our path has already been written.
I have removed all of the interviews and added non diagetic narration in the background. This is supposed to portray the thoughts of the characters; it also helps to show exactly what their problems are. Each of the dialects connects to the next scene to help the experimental flow of the video.
There is a lot more experimental activity in this video then my original video idea. Hopefully I will have the videoing done in time for the post production as there is a lot of editing.
There is a lot of stop frame animation and freeze frame editing. I have now re-done all of the paperwork

3. Narrative and Non Narrative structures

Narrative is a story line, a structure of start, middle and end. To understand the story you would need to watch through all three stages. For this reason, narrative videos are best exhibited in a place where an audience can give full attention. Somewhere like an art museum would not work as well as people view art and then move on. It would be taken out of context and the whole idea of the video would be lost. If it was shown in a cinema, 99% of the audience would stay throughout the entire piece. This is because a cinema is created for the viewing of videos, and the audience will give their full attention when viewing it or they would get lost.
Non Narrative videos have no storyline, they have concepts but no structure. You would be able to walk in half way through the showing of one and still be shown the meaning behind it. This type of video is best exhibited in an art gallery, where people can pass in and out as they please.
Girl Chewing Gum by John Smith is a Non- Narrative video as you would be able to walk in half way through and understand.
Doll Face by Andy Huang has a very strong narrative. Its beginning is just as important as the end, the middle is just as important as the beginning and the end is just as important as the middle. Each section is another part of the story and without all three the audience would not be able to undestand or view the art in the same way as its purpose.

Some videos are a little of both, this could be done by using a non structured video and a voiceover telling the story.
Some films have simple structures and some are more complex. The structures arent always; beginning, middle and end. Sometimes they can start in the middle, go back to the beginning, then to the middle again and follow on to the end. Sometimes this allows us to understand the storyline better even though it seems it would make it harder. Sometimes the structure is produced like that to make it harder for an audience to determine the storyline.

2. The Use of Technology, Techniques and Styles

The use of technology and techniques and styles.

Obviously as we grow, technology grows with us and we are able to do more things, like make certain parts more realistic, tweek certain mistakes better and add more unusual special effects.
We can reproduce things that no longer exist or have never existed like dinosaurs and we can create destruction, making things break and dissapear.
Weve advanced a lot from cave drawings.
Just because we have this technology however, we dont always use it in videos. A video with no special effects and special technology can be just as powerful as a film with a lot.
This all comes down to the craft of the piece; the idea that it is supposed to be very subtle or rather that it is to be overflowing with video animation and other effects?
Telling Lies by Simon Ellis was created in 2000 and is nothing more than a blank screen, voiceovers and text. This simple format of the video was what made it so empowering. Even though we had the technology, it was useless for this idea as it was supposed to be very plain and simple.
Koyaanisqatsi on the other hand was made in 1982, a time not so overflowing with techology but enough to barely sustain the proffesional quality that we have today.
Taking almost 2 years worth of filming to get those amazing shots that make you question their authenticity. Both videos are very powerful and both are created in two very different ways.

Review 6. Muto

Muto
A wall painted animation
Created by. Blu

Muto was made using stop frame animation, and a lot of time and effort.
It was created on street walls in Buenos Aires.
The most vivid concept i thought, was the idea of life, death and rebirth.Throughout the entire clip we are shown this concept. In one part Muto stands there and its stomach opens up like a door, and another one of himself steps out, the new ones stomach opens and one steps out from him and so on.
Death and seperation are shown with Muto being broken up into lots of other things and later they join back together to form again.
the animation is designed to be able to interact with it's surrounding environment, by moving around real life objects and even onto the pavement.

There are many transitions between locations that I didn't spot the first couple of times I watched it.
Everytime i watch it i see something new that i hadnt spotted before, like the many transitions between locatioins.
The non diagetic sounds add to the emphasis of Muto's actions.

Review 5. Everything Turns

Everything Turns
Director. Max Hattler
Duration. 1 Minute
2004

Inspired by Durs Grünbein's poem Vertigo.
Life makes your head spin, and before you know it,it’s over. A very short film about time, life and death.
Everything Turns is produced in a surreal way but with a very real Narrative.
The craft is stop frame animation with simple drawings.

It begins with a clock ticking and a spinning childrens playground ride. The clock turns into bubbles that pop and the ride flattens into a clock. Time is shown going very fast through the speed that the hands on the clock are moving. The ride symbolises the beginning of life, childhood and that then turning into a clock shows childhood goes to quickly.
Next appears a scratchy barcode next to numbers that are counting down. These numbers are in digital form, once again reminding us of time.
Eyes then appear and turn into a woman and man having sexual intercourse. We can see the womans heart beating. The mans penis then turns into a baby in the womb. Obviously this represents birth but also a very important time in life, it is one of the key events.
Next a hand wipes over the screen and we hear a baby cry.
As the hand moves back over we see a fast food box land and a black splodge spread across the screen as it does so. Words begin to appear on the fast food box; "fast," "fast food," "live fast," "faster," "fast food." This represents that bad food will only make our lives shorter, making time obviously go faster. The repitition of the words, i believe symbolises our craving for bad food.
We then see a fruit being sliced and fall into a machine, along with words all jumbled together.
I believe that the machine represents us and our life and everything that we put into it.
The screen then begins to flood over with white. The white is water and we see ducks pass along over the screen. Next to the pond is an old man, this is a very stereotypical image of elderly people feeding birds. The man begins to shrink, aging rapidly as he does. As he becomes shorter and older he turns into a tombstone. Which is the most obvious symbol for death.
At the beginning we see the childs playground ride and at the end we see the old man with the ducks. The similarity between the both is that they are both fun for their age and the idea that as we get older the games and fun we have differ.
The sequence in which it is shown is the sequence in life. If it had been shown in another way the idea of life moving too quickly would not have been as powerful.

Review 4. Contraction

Contraction
Director. Christopher Hewitt & James Cambourne
Duration. 3 minutes
2009

Contraction follows the idea of life literally being pushed back into a person and how it effects the immediate surroundings
It starts off with a close up of a mans face, he is still and his face is emotionless, the shot lasts approximately 30 seconds, before this shot ends he closes his eyes and the screen turns black.
The next shot, he is laying on the floor with a woman, perhaps his girlfriend kneeling over him. She attempts to give him CPR and the audience is immediately pulled in. As she pushes down onto his chest, the paving slabs surrounding them lift up as though the impact of pushing life was shaking the ground beneath them. The more the woman pushes the higher the slabs lift up. This creates suspense and the audience feel emotionally attatched to both of them.
The man starts pushing his body upwards just like the slabs, the idea of life being impacted into a person. He gets up and the next shot we see the woman ask the man "where did you go?" The man does not reply. There is light above them and to me this is a very spiritual sombol of God, and the light raining above life.
The film is very abstract and uses digital and 3d editing to create the lifting slabs.
The makers of this piece wanted to create something that would make the viewer question, what had happened before and this does that. It makes the audience want to understand.

There arent many concepts in this piece other than the most obvous ideas which are; life being pushed back into someone and the impact that it has on the surroundings, and the light symbolising life and maybe even spiritual beings.
The idea of contraction is to depict the concept of rebirth, this is something that is followed by many religions and this is the main concept of the video and also the reason that the video was made.

Review 3. Khoda

Khoda
Director. Reza Dolatabadi
Duration. 5 minutes

Even in the mind, is escape ever possible?

What if you watch a film and whenever you pause it, you face a painting? This idea inspired Reza Dolatabadi to make Khoda. Over 6000 paintings were painstakingly produced during two years to create a five minutes film that would meet the filmmakers' high personal standards
Khoda has a very strong narrative structure, so in this way it is easy to identify what is happening. There are concepts throughout the video but they are not easy to identify.
Concepts are the meanings hidden by a video's narration.

At the beginning of the video it pans across some land. The land is very cartoonistic and surreal, it is very colourful and looks peaceful. We then see a house in birds eye view. A woman appears and we are taken into her eye where the scene changes.

The scene is now a cell, this is easy to see from bars on the window, a bed in the corner and the feeling of loneliness and cold that this image makes us feel. The room is dark and dingy with only a small ray of light shining through the window onto where the man is standing. I think that the ray of light symbolises hope, that one day he will be on the other side. I think it is a very strong and powerful image.
He then begins digging at the ground with a spoon, we see his longing and enthusiasm for wanting to escape by his vigarous actions, this makes us feel sorrow for him.
The man steps onto the hole and as his foot hits the ground grass grows around his feet, the grass starts spreading across his cell and we then see him in a field in front of the house from the beginnning of the movie. I think that when he stepped onto the hole that this was him stepping into the outside world and into his new life.
The image then turns to his face and everything turns red. He screams with rage and is backed against a wall. The next image is through his eyes at masked men pushing and restraining him. One is trying to put a needle into him until he takes it and sticks it into the masked mans neck.
One image in this scene is of a man whos face we do not see but he is wearing a suit, is large and pulls out a cigar. He matches a very strereotypical gangster so from this we percieve him as the leader.
After sticking a needle into the mans neck, the scene turns to him runnning looking behind him as he does so, as he is being followed by the masked people. This scene is in black and white and as they run they look as though parts of their bodies are breaking off into blocks.
This could be seen as though the more they run the more exhausted they get and are effort is deterierating or as speed blurs shown as chipped blocks.
The last scene he is in an apartment with an amazing view of a city. He begins to walk up to the window and as he does so is reflection changes into different people but only slightly.
I think that maybe this could resemble all the people that he had wronged or was running from.

The craft in this piece is amazing, it is all painted images, over 6000 of them and they are all very realistic. There was a lot of time taken to produce this piece. The pictures are very scratchy but i think that it adds to the realism.

1. Discussing Artists

Doll Face, Koyaanisqatsi and Telling Lies are all based around everyday life and problems within the world, whereas Eel Girl and Muto are more surreal.
Koyaanisqatsi is a fight between nature and man, Doll Face is a fight between ourselves and Telling Lies is fighting with each other and in relationships. Although they are similar in that way, they are very different in the way that they are shown. Doll face is video animated whereas Koyaanisqatsi focuses on real life images, this makes the video more powerful in showing the problem. Doll Face is also very powerful but the way in which it is shown is more to enhance the concepts. Telling Lies uses neither of these techniques, instead it is just a blank screen with text and non diagetic voices.
Muto, is a wall painted animation. Using stop frame animation, the images look as though they are moving.
Eel girl is a very surreal piece, it uses the myth of a siren incorperated into the body of an Eel girl. The making of Eel Girl is extreme make up and special effects.
Doll Face, Telling Lies, Muto and Eel Girl are all relatively current videos whereas Koyaanisqatsi is quite an old video being released in 1982. Taking 6 years to produce Koyaanisqatsi was the one that took the most time. Because of its simplicity, Telling Lies took the shortest time to produce.
The video that had the most craft, is Muto. Taking a lot of effort to not only make the wall paintings move, but show the imagination and creativity that was put into it.
All of the videos had concepts. Some were shown more vivedly while others were more discreet, some took the concepts of problems within the world while others ranged between more subtle problems and fictional characters.

Chapter 5. My Experimental Video

Belief is the main concept that i would like to portray in my experimental video.
The main point being that as we get older we lose the ability to believe. A child's belief is seen as imagination more than fact, even though the older generation believed the exact same things when they were younger.
The belief i am focusing on is magic.
The way in which i would like to show this concept, is by part of the video being of a woman with magical powers. I will be able to show this with stop frame animation and lighting.
The other part of the video will show interviews with members of the public. I will ask both adults and young children if they believe in magic, and if they do believe then what they think magic is.
I would like to switch between the two parts with either juxtaposition, change in music or a slight fuzz as if changing the channel on a television.
The lighting would be dark to give the effect of mystery. I would like the majority of lighting to be from candles.
When exhibiting my work i would prefer for it to be indoors with insense and candles to create even more of a magical effect.
My main inspiration was my own opinion that adults need to regain their ability to believe. However, i was inspired by Doll Face, not because they are particularly similar but because they are real life problems shown in a surreal way.

6. Audience and Audience Interpretation of Work

An audience and their interpretation can completely change the meaning of a piece of work.
One persons opinion can influence another person.
So in this sense I agree that people’s opinions are very important. Although the artist themselves may have wanted to portray a certain concept, the audiences might not realise it and it will be lost.
In the Tate Modern, there were many ways in which people were expressing their thoughts and feelings towards certain pieces of art. The main reaction was quiet and stiff, which is the stereotype that people have portrayed onto people when they view art.
A few people had different interpretations of the work. The gory pieces had a lot of squeamish reactions, whilst some people found the work funny and exciting.
In some ways it Is important that we all perceive a piece of work in the same way, as this may be what the creators intentions were. At the same time though it is also very important for us all to have different views and opinions.
Once a piece of work has been created, the artist no longer has any influence on how we perceive the art.
If an artist is trying to show a certain concept and the audience misreads it or doesn't understand it then the artist has failed in portraying what he wanted to. I believe that it does matter as the whole intention of the film would be pointless.

Andy Huang's Doll Face has very strong concepts and they are shown very vividly, however; people still understood things in different ways and had some different opinions to others. Although all of the interpretations are similar, the smallest differences change the way people see the piece greatly.

Review 2. Koyaanisqatsi

Created by: Godfrey Reggia
1983
Duration: 1hr 20mins

Koyaanisqatsi, translated means: Life out of balance.
A state of life that calls for another way of living.

Balance is the core of the world, with good there is evil, with day there is night.
Godfreys video portrays many different types of balance and contrast.

With the film starting off with tribl drawings in a cave, and ending with a rocket firing off into space the main contrast is highley obvious; techinical and natural ways of life.
The same with the landscapes of the Grand Canyon and New York. Nature against man.
Another concept which is also shown throughout the video is destruction. Old buildings were being demolished and replaced by newer buildings, which shows the differences between rich and poor. This concept is also portrayed through the people in the video.
Throughout the video, the scenes changed in speed, some were slowed down whereas others were sped up. I think that this symbolises that we need to slow down on the planet, that technology is advancing rapidly and we are constantly relying on it.

The visual images in Koyaanisqatsi are very empowering, most of the shots are shown in either slow or fast motion. There are many night scenes throughout the video. In some we see people in the buildings turning their lights on or off. This is also going against nature; when the world is dark we can make light.
There were many explosions in the film, the fire is natural and the fire wins over technology.
A lot of the shots seemed very dim in lighting, with a dusty effect. This reffers back to the concept of old and new and what Man has made the Earth become.
There are many blurry visuals in Koyaanisqatsi, this could be to show that the world is blind to the mess that we have and still are creating.
At the beginning of the film we see cave drawings, it stays showing these for about a minute so it immediately seems important to the film.

The music in Koyaanisqatsi is non diagetic. It is cleverly placed to create completely different meanings to what is happening in the scene, for example; at the end of the video the rocket blew up and as it fell the music was soft and peaceful. If the music had been heavy and fast then the audience would see it as intense rather than have sympathy.
The peaceful music could also be there to show that the world is at peace again and that in the end technology failed and slight balance is restored.
At the very beginning of the film when we see the cave drawings, there is tribal chant music in the background, this is played a few times throughout the film.
The are some parts where dramatic music is being played even though nothing particularly disturbing is happening, however; that fact that we see nothing disturbing happening is probably the point that the video is trying to make. These terrible things are happening and because we arent worried about them, we are not shocked by them.

Overall i found Koyaanisqatsi very interesting. It is a very empowering piece and makes you see these problems in a different light. The way in which it is showed is interesting, with only non diagetic sound, and the simple effect of slow and fast motion, the concepts are shown effortlessly.

4. The use of exhibition space to create meaning

Every piece of art has a meaning behind it and when the art is moved to a different space, or the atmosphere around it changes, its meaning and the way people see it differ.
On a blank space a piece of artwork stands out. It becomes clearer and the audiences attention is drawn only to the art. If a space is cluttered with other work your attention can be distracted very easily and you can miss understanding the concept of the art.
A gallery is purposely built to house art, a space created where these pieces can be viewed by the public. When someone arrives at a gallery they expect to see art, that is why they are there, so they give their full attention to the work.
If Picasso's 'Naked lady on a red armchair' was placed on the walls of a classroom, even though it is the same painting, its purpose and attention decreases.
It is no longer the point of attention, it is an addition to the rest of the room.
If a very famous piece of work is in an art museum there is a lot of security around it, this shows us from the beginning that it is an important piece of work even if we don't know exactly what it is or who created it. It automatically recieves attention and respect.
Every piece of art is created with a reason behind it, many artists want to portray the concept more vivedly, for instance; the shape or temperature of a room can change an audiences view of art completely.
On a recent trip to the Tate Modern i saw a piece of work by Robert Therrien, Table and four Chairs. Immediately this became my favourite piece of art, it was so simple yet so extravagant. I was immediately given the sense of feeling small, like a dog scrounging for food. Because the piece itself was something that we see in everyday life i felt at ease to touch the work. I did not feel as though i should have to be quiet to appreciate the work but that i could express myself in whichever way i wanted to. I found that the larger than life piece was exempt from the silence rule. The room in which it was in seemed small, this may have been that the Table and Four Chairs crowded the room or that this was intentional to make the piece seem even bigger.
It was the only work in that room as any other pieces would have been shadowed.
In a gallery, an artist usually has an order in which they want their work to be in. The order can change its meaning greatly. The order can be in colour, effect or the syle of mood that it is supposed to portray.
Noise has a lot of effect on the way that we see art, if some people laugh most people will laugh as well, whether to avoid embaressment of not having the same effect or they saw the art as serious and the laughter made them see it differently. Our reactions change when other peoples do even if we dont agree with it.
In conclusion, the art is what the space makes it, beit the lighting, sound, security or even shape of the room.

Review 1. Doll Face

Created by Andy Huang
Doll face is a strange piece with many powerful concepts, they are easily realised but still debatable.
The video is of a robot in a box with a doll face. Next to her is a TV which switches on.
The screen focuses on a woman which either suggests that this image is more important to the doll or maybe that the image is being forced upon her, which i think represents the force of the media.
The doll begins to apply make up to her face to make herself look like the woman on the TV which shows that she is not happy with herself, and this is maybe the reason for the robotic body.
She stretches for the TV as it moves away, she keeps reaching out for the TV and breaks. I think that it symbolises people in everyday life pushing themselves to breaking point to achieve the unachievable.
The craft of the piece is video animation with a lot of detail making it seem realistic even though it is a very surreal piece.
